Tommy Hilfiger gives good set. Anyone lucky enough, like he is, to vacation on the exclusive Caribbean island of Mustique recognized the replica of the famous Basil’s Bar, watering hole to Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Princess Margaret way back when, which Hilfiger erected inside Pier 36. He even created a mini lagoon and flew in barkeep Basil Charles himself for good measure.
“It’s island life,” said Hilfiger, stating the obvious backstage before the show. “I love the islands.” Who wouldn’t when the lifestyle means frolicking beachside in an adorable Rasta-inflected crochet bikini with your friends, as Gigi and Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin did for the finale, along with a gaggle of more anonymous models who skipped into the water for a cute and hokey Insta-ready finale.
Colorful, creative swimwear was one of the collection’s strong suits, but the lineup also had enough upbeat, youthful real clothes to pack for an extended vacation or a laid-back summer in the city. Hilfiger trimmed Oxfords with tropical florals, and rendered tanks, tank dresses and beachy maxis in multihued crochet. There were embroidered satin bombers and printed pajama looks, striped lace sundresses and nifty slingback tennis shoes. The girls looked happy and comfortable, their hair styled in natural waves and curls. Island life looked good.
