It was Christian Siriano’s simplest, most unfettered shapes that shone brightest in his spring collection — among them, the boldly collared trenchcoats in bright orange or turquoise. A series of more tailored looks in gray-and-white striped cotton underscored the designer’s ease with a sporty attitude: a double-breasted blazer dress, and wide-leg pants and a shirtdress, for example. He even managed to morph his men’s wear mood into evening with a handsome, long, white crepe safari dress and a full-skirted turquoise silk trench gown.
But Siriano is known mostly for his dressed-up evening numbers and this season that meant he was one of many designers who didn’t know how or when to stop with all those fringes, bows, sheers, slits, flounces and ruffles — which is why his no-frills exits were such a welcome surprise.
