In an intimate presentation, Kim Shui showed her collection against an urban chain-link fence intertwined with an array of flowers, reflecting a contrast of edgy and feminine. Casting a diverse range of models and real people, Shui did what she does best: mixed and manipulated fabrics. There were tweed plaid frayed shorts, a circular cutout lace coat with leather trim, and a lace, gingham and brocade shirtdress. Sometimes, however, there’s too much of a good thing, and the collection overall was schizophrenic. It was an overwhelming mash-up of patterns, textures and colors. It would be nice to see Shui’s collection evolve past the jumble.
