Grace within strength. Those are the words that epitomize both Sachin & Babi’s customer and the label’s spring collection, which took direction from ballet. Not the literal tutu, but more the interpretation of movement, muscle and poise required to dance. The offering, heavy on dresses, was imbued with a sense of romance and fluidity that kept its inspiration at heart. As models stood in front of blown-up campaign images, dancers from Ballet Beautiful (also wearing the collection) moved softly in the urban space.
For Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia, modern women are redefining what works for evening. “There used to be this gold standard of eveningwear, and women are challenging that,” Sachin said. Their proposition: a lineup of dresses that could be glammed up — or grounded via lace-up flats. The ballet references were most evident in the lace-adorned camis and grosgrain ties, while the rest of the pieces played with patchwork lace and embroidery. A beautiful black ruffle dress with color piping could be imagined at a lunch date or dinner party.
Color and print factored largely into the lineup, of course, in floral lace and flower prints derived from the lace among other iterations that made it truly Sachin & Babi. “It’s very rare that we do a collection without botanicals,” laughed Sachin.
