The Sonia by Sonia Rykiel spring collection was the answer to what a French girl needs on her summer vacation at her country house. “It’s really about mixing and matching and the cool attitude of an American woman, who doesn’t have any rules,” said Lola Rykiel, wearing a red, white and blue-striped T-shirt with eyelet cap sleeves and light washed boy jeans from the collection, during a preview.
The lineup was colorful and fresh with a palette spanning pink, green, bright yellow, red and lavender, plus stripes and micro florals. There was a plethora of crisp cotton poplins, such as a voluminous yet easy red dress, pajama looks and boyish pieces, including Rykiel’s favorite, a navy and green sweater with the French words for “tomboy” done in intarsia. The house’s signature stripes and tweeds came on casual T-shirts and loose-fitting jackets. A new denim wash was meant to reflect the surface of a swimming pool, next to which the French girl on holiday sits and sips her apertif.
