Alessandra Rich never met a fashion victim she didn’t like. Turning bad-taste clichés into something cleverly chic is her specialty, and for spring she embraced outrageous “mistakes” — wearing track pants with a leopard jacket, a colorful turban and massive fake diamonds, for example —with both arms. “She’s a woman who takes it all,” said Rich, appropriately naming the collection “Misstake.”
A pink jersey tracksuit had a cropped jacket and pants that snapped with giant fake diamonds down the side. A flirty floral baby doll had an elastic logo waistband under the bust. A silk georgette leopard-print dress with a sweetheart neckline and crystal rings decorating the straps seemed va-va-voomed to the max, then Rich added on a thick blue-and-green striped elastic belt with a crystal circle detail. Against all odds, it worked. “It’s all the things that are really not a good idea at all,” she said.
The trick to Rich’s take on tacky is that it’s entirely self-aware. Her dresses are cut from impeccable laces and silks and the execution is spot on. And she’s not without her understated side. Offsetting all the flash was a group of lean, long-sleeved solid gowns done in liquid silk jersey and cady. Stunningly sexy yet relatively understated, they were perfect for the woman who has learned from her mistakes.
