Could we be looking at the fashion of the future? In his spring collection, titled “Silence,” Anrealage designer Kunihiko Morinaga used augmented reality technology (which “enhances” a real object with computer-generated imagery or sound) to quite literally give voice to his designs.

This was most apparent in his final series of boxy white shift dresses featuring a series of giant messages across their fronts, including “Noise,” “Silence,” “Voice,” which were partially crossed out by wide black bands of fabric that doubled as stiff part-sleeves, creating squared-off silhouettes. When the models stood in front of one of the iPads that periodically punctuated the runway, these disappeared to reveal the whole message to the audience, accompanied by the accompanying sound of the words themselves.

In a similar manner, pretty skater dresses with black-and-white photo prints, of a forest, ocean and floral meadow, relayed Space-Age interpretations of the sounds each makes.

Elsewhere in the collection, IRL stripes or blocks of black-on-white backgrounds served to cross out logos and text to drive the message home in a more wearable manner. His shapes were ample, with many capelike designs that were subverted versions of wardrobe staples like the biker jacket or coatdress, while pants and skirts were long and flowing.

Morinaga partnered with AR expert Tom Kawada to develop a special app to accompany the designs, available for iPhones on Oct. 3.

The collection is also tied to a line of sneakers developed in collaboration with Asics, including two designs with AR functionality.
