Hidenori Kumakiri’s pattern-making experience — that was the Japanese designer’s profession before creating his Beautiful People label 10 years ago — has obviously stood him in good stead.

Instead of starting with a specific inspiration, his graceful spring collection was built beginning with the construction, he explained through an interpreter. Kumakiri cleverly mixed contrasting styles, artfully attaching them together with zips, one half inside, the opposite half out, making for an original take on layering, although each piece also worked as a stand-alone. Less well done, it could have been awkward, but it was anything but.
